Truth • Duty • Honor

The Staunton Military Academy Alumni Foundation (SMAAF) Leadership Scholarship is a perpetual $2,500 scholarship awarded annually to the Mary Baldwin University – Virginia Women’s Institute for Leadership (VWIL) cadet completing her junior year and entering her senior year who exhibits strong leadership qualities, high academic standards, is committed to completion of one of the military service Reserve Office Training Candidate (ROTC) programs, plans to commission is the U.S. Armed Forces upon graduation and who will best represent the SMA legacy and traditions. Beginning in 2008, this scholarship was modified to award two $1,000 scholarships each year. One is awarded to a rising senior and the other to a rising junior that meet the same criteria as above. The scholarship is endowed by SMA Alumni Foundation. Recipients of this scholarship are determined by VWIL in consultation with the SMA Alumni Foundation.

Henry Scholarship Honoring SMA

The Henry Scholarship Honoring Staunton Military Academy is a perpetual $2,500 scholarship awarded annually to the Mary Baldwin College – Virginia Women’s Institute for Leadership (VWIL) cadet completing her junior year and entering her senior year who exhibits strong leadership qualities, high academic standards, is committed to completion of one of the ROTC programs, plans to commission is the U.S. Armed Forces upon graduation and who will best represent the SMA legacy and traditions. The scholarship is endowed by Hunter W. Henry, Jr., SMA ‘46. Recipients of this scholarship are determined by VWIL in consultation with the SMA Alumni Association officer designated as the administrator of the scholarship on behalf of Hunter W. Kristy M. Wheeler, VWIL ’01 Captain, USAF Reserves
BRONZE STAR

Captain Wheeler received the Bronze Star for her service in Iraq. For six months in 2006, Kristy Wheeler led agents in a combat zone at Baghdad International Airport, running complex informant operations. Her efforts allowed coalition members and combat equipment to move safely through mortar and rocket attacks. Wheeler was the cadet commander of the VWIL corps of cadets while in college at MBC and the first VWIL recipeint of the Henry Scholarship Honoring SMA.

The scholarship is endowed by Hunter W. Henry, Jr., SMA ‘46. Recipients of this scholarship are determined by VWIL in consultation with the SMA Alumni Association officer designated as the administrator of the scholarship on behalf of Hunter W. Henry, Jr.

Colonel Robert Wease Memorial Scholarship

The Colonel Robert Wease Memorial Scholarship is a $2,000 scholarship awarded to a rising VWIL Senior with a Leadership Studies minor who demonstrates interest in how government functions, inquisitiveness, and respect for peers. The recipient is chosen by the VWIL administration and presented at the April SMA-VWIL Review during the association’s reunion.
