In 1976, when SMA closed the doors, we did not have a strong Alumni organization. In fact, we had very little. The first attempt to purchase SMA fell short. The SMA campus was sold for over $1,000,000 to Mary Baldwin College. We, (the Alumni), in the few months available, were only able to raise $400,000. The money and pledges were returned once it became apparent the Alumni Association would not be able to purchase and run the school.

Colonel Harrison Dey and Paul J."Ike" Kivlighan, SMA '29 were able to open a small Alumni office in Staunton and began collecting names and addresses to compile an alumni list. From 1976 through 1986, several of our Alumni became involved and it was through the efforts and donations of Ike Kivlighan, SMA '29, Art Klemm, SMA '46, Chuck Minihan, SMA '42, Manly Hubbs, SMA '34, Horace Parsly, SMA '24, Bill Geiger, SMA '54, Phil Regar, SMA '29, David Dana, SMA '49, John Nolde, SMA '63, Tom Davis, SMA '62, Bob Dalzell, SMA '45, and Bill Penny, SMA '54, the Association and Foundation were formed. The SMA name, records and memorabilia were purchased and donated to the SMA Association.

In 1986, the first All Years SMA Reunion was held. In 1987, Bob Rossi, SMA '67, was elected President of the Association. Bob was able to enlist the support of Mr and Mrs Tucker, who donated the use of the office space at the Ingleside Resort Hotel (at no cost to the Association). Bob further organized and computerized the Alumni address list.
